JUDITH LEIBER

Known globally for her bejeweled handbags and minaudieres, Judith Leiber is the leading designer in evening clutches. Adored by many for her whimsical and dreamy sensibility, Judith Leiber year after year produces a "menagerie of dogs and cats, turtles, fish and real shells, as well as tiny suitcases, books and folding fans; fruit, vegetables, and eggs. Collectors find these treasures irresistible. They are witty little sculptures, appealing objects of adornment."*

Some of Judith Leiber's endless inspiration comes from the past. An avid history buff, Judith often pulls ideas for bags from museum visits and libraries.

"A wearable, collectible art form, Judith Leiber bags are coveted by celebrities and socialites and are in the permanent collections of such museums as the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York."Judith Leiber, The Artful Handbag

While she does produce up to 6 new collections a year, she still has her favorites she prefers to re-introduce in new patterns and colors. Cats and eggs are among these, in varying sizes.

"Judith Leiber never tires of designing handbags. Each new idea is a delight and each new bag triggers further variations, new directions. "Here is the leopard and pattern on an egg. Have I shown you our new Humpty Dumpty?" She tells me proudly, "Now we are doing the tomato in orange and it will be a pumpkin! We are a crazy bunch!" - Dorothy Globus, Director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute

Leiber's more intricately designed clutches involve several steps, performed in several different countries. A wax mold is sculpted in the US, sent to Italy to make a brass mold, sent to England for a leather lining, then sent back to the US for the final hand painting and crystal application.

"Her incomparable handbags truly merit the appellation of museum quality. Sensuous and tatile, they ask to be picked up." - Judith Leiber: The Artful Handbag
