One Night with Janis Joplin at Arena Stage is a great way to spend an evening. We went on Tuesday evening and loved the show. My friend and I dressed up late 60's with tie dye scarves, feathers in hair, a bit of fringe, denim and long beads. The lead singer, Mary Bridget Davies, channeled Janis beautifully. There was a substitute for the Blues Singer role on the night we went, a Ms. Shinnerrie Jackson, and we were not disappointed at all. She "blue" us away with her stunning, powerful voice - wow - really impressive. The blues is my favorite music so it was nothing but pleasure to hear such fabulous voices and music. We hope the show finds some backers to take it on to the next level. This show got everyone on their feet clapping and smiling. There were quite a few people that were about 10 years older than me and it made me think that these were the people that were a actual part of that fantastic era of music. They were the hippies and the radicals, even if they may not look the part now. We were all transported back in time for a couple of hours - hitting 1930's on up - a little Aretha, Bessie Smith, etc. The show is playing through November 4th so if you get the chance GO.
